  About Drive Image Special Edition
  =================================
PowerQuest Drive Image SE (Special Edition) provides a way to
restore your computer if you experience a hard disk crash or
other system failure. Your computer manufacturer may have used
PowerQuest Drive Image SE (Special Edition) to create an image
of everything that was installed on the computer at the time
you purchased it. If the manufacturer created a factory image,
it is saved on a separate partition on the hard disk. You can
use Drive Image SE to restore the factory image and return
your computer to the state in which it shipped from the
  manufacturer.

Although it is not necessary, you can use Drive Image SE to
store an additional image file that you create. For example,
if you install several applications and save data files on
your hard disk, you can create a new image file that includes
both the applications and the data. You can then save that
image file on the hard disk. If you experience a hard disk or
system failure, you can restore the image that includes the
applications and data files you use.

PowerQuest recommends that you create a Drive Image SE
diskette as a "rescue disk." If your computer fails, you can
boot and run Drive Image SE from the rescue disk.

Before running Drive Image SE, you should run a disk utility
such as ScanDisk or CHKDSK on each partition of the source
drives to check for file system errors (run CHKDSK /F if you
are on a Windows NT workstation system). Finally, verify that
virus protection is not enabled in the BIOS before creating a
new backup with Drive Image SE.

To start Drive Image SE, double-click the Drive Image SE icon
  on your Windows desktop.

This readme contains the following topics:
  1. To create a new backup
  2. To restore a backup
  3. To create a Drive Image SE diskette
  4. To uninstall Drive Image Special Edition

  1. To create a new backup
  ==========================
You can create a backup image of your C:\ drive at any time.
The C:\ partition must be a FAT, FAT32, or NTFS partition, and
it must be directly before the backup partition on your hard
  disk.

       1. From the Drive Image SE main screen, click Options >
  Create New Backup.
       2. Click Yes to restart the computer in MS DOS mode,
create the image file, and store it in the backup partition.
If you have created a backup image previously, the new image
  will overwrite the old image.

In step 1, there may be a button on the main screen that you
can click to create a backup. The computer manufacturer
determines which buttons appear on the main screen.

After step 1, if the computer manufacturer enabled image file
passwords, you will be prompted to type a password (or you can
leave the password fields blank), then click OK.

If there is not enough unused space in the backup partition on
your hard disk to save the image file, Drive Image SE will
resize the partition. Drive Image SE will display the minimum,
maximum, and recommended sizes for the backup partition and
let you specify the size you want.
Drive Image SE takes the space from the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS
partition that you are backing up. If there is not enough
unused space in that partition to take, you will not be able
to resize the backup partition and create an image file. You
can delete files from the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS partition to
create more unused space on the hard disk.

  2. To restore a backup
  ======================
You can restore either the factory image or a backup image
that you have created. Be aware that restoring an image will
replace the contents of the C:\ partition with the image you
  restore.

       1. Make sure any virus protection software is disabled in
the BIOS. If virus protection is enabled, Drive Image SE will
  hang.
       2. From the Drive Image SE main window, click Restore
Backup to restore an image you have created, or click Options >
  Restore Factory Backup.
Drive Image SE will restart the computer in MS DOS mode
  and restore the image file.

In step 2, if the computer manufacturer did not create a
factory image, the Restore Factory Backup option will not
appear on the Options pull-down menu.

  3. To create a Drive Image SE diskette
  ======================================
In the event that you are unable to boot your machine, you can
use the Drive Image SE diskette to restore the image backup to
  your machine.

       1. From the Drive Image SE main window, click Create
  Drive Image SE diskette.
       2. Insert a blank (unformatted) or formatted diskette
  into the floppy disk drive.
       3. Press any key to continue. If your diskette is
unformatted, it will be formatted before the Drive Image SE
  diskette is made.
Once the diskette is made, press any key to return to the
  Drive Image SE program.

To run Drive Image SE from diskette so you can restore a
backup, insert the Drive Image SE diskette into the floppy
drive, then reboot the computer. Drive Image SE will
  automatically run from the diskette.

  4. To uninstall Drive Image Special Edition
  ===========================================
Depending on how your computer was configured by the
manufacturer, the Uninstall Backup System feature may not be
available on the Options pull-down menu of Drive Image SE.

Uninstalling Drive Image SE from the hard disk will remove the
program and may or may not (depending on how your computer was
configured by the manufacturer) delete the destination
partition where backups are saved. If the destination
partition is deleted, all files on the partition (including
any files you have added) will be erased.

       1. From the Drive Image SE main window, click Options >
  Uninstall Backup System.

If the uninstall option is not available on the Options
pull-down menu and you want to uninstall Drive Image SE,
contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.
Click Help > About to display manufacturer contact
  information.
